CE 2: An article on AI by CNN

In 1980, the Cable News Network (CNN), owned by the Turner Broadcasting System, was launched. It was the first network to be a 24-hour news outlet in the United States. The wide-availability of it means that it reaches over 100 million households. They also have international broadcasts. CNN has been a major outlet for many notable events in recent history, such as the September 11th attacks, the 2008 U.S. election, and most recently the 2016 U.S. election. The article I am analyzing today is about the Pentagon investing two billion dollars into developing artificial intelligence. CNN spoke with a deputy director at DARPA about their plans to accelerate the rate of progress, and he believes that they can do in five years what would was expected to take two decades. CNN also gives examples of recent developments in AI, such as Amazon’s Alexa, Siri, and self-driving cars. They also highlight the difficulties that AI will have to overcome. The article seems to balance itself fairly evenly, by starting out with some of the ambitious points, and ending on a sobering note about the difficulties involved. CNN appears to have obtained accurate information, and they reached out to the source of the subject for comment. However, they only include one conversation they had with one person at DARPA. They do not include any other experts or persons in the field. While the person they quote is careful to also balance the pros and cons, they are not the only person likely to be qualified to talk about this, from DARPA. While I believe CNN produced an interesting article about a subject that is increasingly important, I have felt that CNN has been skewing towards “click-bait.” I remember as a kid wanting to go visit the CNN center in Atlanta. I held them with high regard, when I had a brief interest in media, partly inspired by them. With this article in particular, they could have included outside sources beyond DARPA to better balance their coverage.
