In August of 1846, the Smithsonian Institution was established by the United States government “for the increase and diffusion of knowledge.” It is a group of museums and research centers and is named after British scientist James Smithson. The institution includes nine research centers, nineteen museums and a zoo and has coined the title of “the nation’s attic” due to the 154 million items that it holds. The Smithsonian receives 30 million visitors annually that receive admission free of charge.
This specific article speaks of an innovative idea for the flu vaccine. Normally with this vaccine, people are injected with a dead strain of the virus so that their immune system can create the antibodies needed for the real thing. This becomes hard sometimes, however, because the influenza virus evolves quickly, and it is a rather aggressive approach for people who might have a compromised immune system. This new idea proposes the use of llama antibodies. Llamas have smaller antibodies than humans that allow them to hook onto the virus in a place that does not evolve as quickly allowing it to neutralize more viruses easily. This technique can also be administered in a less aggressive manner as opposed to the traditional approach.
This article uses all three of the rhetorical appeals to varying degrees. Firstly, it establishes a great ethos appeal due to the fact that the whole innovation is to pursue an easier, safer way to keep people safe and well. It also uses logos due to the topic of the article and the step by step description of how it works. The mention of studies and quotes also contribute greatly to logos. Lastly It uses pathos through the emotions conveyed throughout the article. These emotions range from happiness to surprise to concern due to the results of this study and the fact that the idea worked out in the end.
This was an interesting article. The use of antibodies from such an exotic animal is a very unique idea and it worked out in the favor of the scientists which is great. We keep making breakthroughs in medicine every day and it is very exciting to wonder what we will figure out next and what that can do for humanity.
