Assessment of News Source
Fox News has been criticized for favoring the Republican Party and conservative causes, despite employees denying any bias in their coverage. Former CEO (resigned in 2016 after allegations of sexual misconduct), Roger Ailes, was open about his political views and served as media consultants for Republican presidents: Richard Nixon, Ronald Reagan, George W. Bush, and became an advisor to the Donald Trump campaign. Current CEO, Suzanne Scott, is the first female chief executive of Fox News has been with the company since its debut in 1996. She arose as one of Ailes’s victims and has made progress in the news source’s cultural changes and scrutiny of content.
Summary
Howard Kurtz’s article, “Caravan Clash: Press Accusing President of ‘Fear’ and Falsehoods,’” discusses the media’s backlash in response to Trump’s approach to the “Caravan Crisis.” Kurtz quotes other media sources, such as CNN and New York Times, that criticize and debunk the president’s tactics as “nationalist” and based on “falsehoods.” They call Trump out for using this situation to help promote his campaign for improved immigration laws for the upcoming, Midterm elections. Kurtz takes time to point out that Trump is not the only president, nor political leader to provoke fear in the public before election time, and provides examples of the past two Democratic presidents engaging in similar tactics.
Analysis
The author of this article, Kurtz, is considered to be a renowned media reporter, having been the host of CNN’s media criticism program and covered media for The Washington Post for twenty-nine years. He has had a background in finding reliable sources and media, so despite some hints of opinion language, Kurtz’s article remains seemingly unbiased and provides reasoning for both sides of the argument. He does, however, seem slightly annoyed in his tone when looking at the extent the media has gone to to criticize Trump. While he does not follow up with evidence that past media coverage has not also done the same to past presidents, he does agree that the president has somewhat brought this upon himself, with his controversial immigration claims that have no proof of whether they’re true or not. Kurtz points out that what Trump is doing is not right, but also calls upon the past two Democratic presidents for doing the same in favor of their political affiliations. He is critical of the media’s coverage of Trump, while being equally critical of Trump, but offers a better medium concerning the issue.
Opinion
While I am not a Fox News fan, I have noticed a difference in their presentation and media coverage. Having people who are experienced and come from different backgrounds in media coverage, such as Kurtz, is beneficial in composing balanced content that is regarding both sides of politics. I do agree that Donald Trump is highly criticized in the media and rarely represented as doing something beneficial, but I do have to wonder if this is new or if this has been true for other past presidents and Trump, with his active participation in social media, is considered an easy target.
