Assessment of the Source- The BBC is a British based news corporation that does reporting on events around the world. Originally founded in 1922, the BBC is often credited as one of the oldest news broadcasting organizations in the world. The BBC is funded through a base rate charged to all British citizens, that helps fund their broadcasting, equipment, programming, etc. BBC has been found to report things with very factual information with little to no bias in their reporting.
Summary of the Article- This article details the accounts of the recent shooting at a Pittsburgh synagogue that killed 11 people and injured more. Specifically, the article focuses in on the nurse that helped the shooter recover from his injuries during his time in the hospital following his rampage. The article states that the nurse does not believe that the man is "evil" and that he is simply misguided and ignorant. The article details how many Jewish people helped the man recover, despite their beliefs.
Analysis of the Article- The article does a very good job of allowing the nurse, who has been mentioned in countless news articles following the shooting, to state her side of why she treated the shooter the way she did at the hospital. The article includes a lengthy statement from the nurse's Facebook page, chronicling her thoughts and feelings on the situation. She felt the need to clear up any confusion anyone was having as to why she helped the man after he committed the horrible shooting. Simply saying, "I chose to show him empathy. I felt that the best way to honor his victims was for a Jew to prove him wrong. Besides, if he finds out I’m Jewish, does it really matter?"
Opinion- I think this article does a very good job of detailing the background of not only the shooting that was committed, but also the harassment the nurse has been getting regarding her actions following the shooting. It does a very good job of providing factual, detailed information regarding the woman's feelings, included a testimony from her. Allowing the general public to read a statement from someone who's name keeps being mentioned, but never hearing anything from her.
