CE Post #4: Analysis of a News Report by NBC
Founded in 1940, NBC News is a division of the National Broadcasting Company (NBC)—which owns popular programs such as Dateline NBC, Today, and Meet the Press. They are a subsidiary of NBCUniversal, which is itself a subsidiary of Comcast. It has broadcasts worldwide, but it is based in the United States. NBC News is the first news program that was scheduled on a frequent basis. It currently operates a 24-hour news network, known as MSNBC. The article reports on a story by Bloomberg that claims they have 17 anonymous sources that allege a backdoor was created during the manufacturing of chips by Apple, without their permission. The purpose of the backdown was allegedly to be used by China for nefarious reasons. The NBC report gathered comments from Apple and other sources that claim they regularly look out for these sorts of attacks. Further, Apple has not found any evidence to suggest the story is true. Starting with the article title, the headline by NBC does not appear to be intended for shock value. Another source has a headline that attempts to grab the attention of the reader in a way that would make one think the outcome is different than it is. NBC also successfully draws comments from reputable sources and agencies of the government that could confirm or deny parts of the claim. Unlike other sources of this report, they do not fill the article with speculation, and they summarize what the facts are without inferring much opinion. In fact, they do not include much opinion-based wording at all. My take on this article and news source is that they did a successful job at minimizing bias. NBC has been around for a long period of time, and I would regard them as a reputable place to get news, so long as one is careful to distinguish between the facts and opinions expressed by news authors.
