Assesment of News Source: The news source I came across was from U.S. News. This is an American media company that publishes news, opinion, consumer advice, rankings, and analysis. U.S. News is best known today for its influential Best Colleges and Best Hospitals rankings, but it has expanded its content and product offerings in education and health. U.S. News can be biased within some articles because they allow room for their writers to have their opinion inserted within the articles. But they are a reliable news source and continues to be one for the people of America.
Summary of Article: This article talks about the argument throughout our nation to bring the legal age of buying tobacco from 18 to 21. Throughout the article it brings up many statistics in boosting up the legal age, where increasing the tobacco product to 21 nationwide it would approximately result in 249,000 fewer premature deaths, 45,000 fewer deaths from lung cancer, and 4.2 million fewer years of life lost. It also brings up how 3.6 million middle and highschool students are tabacco users, usually through the form of e-cigarettes. The article calls for there to be an imediate change for the smoking age to rise up.
Analysis: The writer of this article is Katelyn Newman. Throughout the essay, it is unsure which side she is truly on. She brings up the facts about the pros of bringing up the tabacco age but she does not really put in her own opinion about how she feels about it. She takes more of a logos approach when writing this.
Opinion: I completly agree with the increase of the legal age of purchasing tabacco. Students within middle or highschool should not even be in contact with tabacco, in which ever form they take it. They understand smoking as a opportunity to increase their social status, not as an opportunity to risk your health and maybe even upset those who care about you. The rise of the legal age may not completly stop these kids from smoking, but it is a right step towards a solution to this problem and something that the whole nation should be on board with.
