Operating out of Atlanta, the Cable News Network (CNN) is an American news-oriented television channel that leans left politically. CNN is owned by a division of WarnerMedia, owned by AT&T. It was founded in 1980 by Ted Turner, a media proprietor, in an effort to start a 24-hour news broadcasting channel and for a while, CNN was the only channel that could claim this. In 1982, a companion channel by the name of CNN2 was released, though given time and multiple name changes, CNN2 became known as HLN.
The article describes a certain particle in astronomy and particle physics known as neutrino. Very little is known about these particles because they are so different from everything else that we know. They are described as 'ghostly' due to their nature, they are vaporous with nearly undetectable mass and can pass through any material or condition no matter how extreme and remain the same. Scientists at a facility in Antarctica after much research were able to pinpoint the neutrinos' origins to a galaxy known as a blazar nearly four billion light-years away from earth. Blazars are different from other galaxies due to the fact that they have a rapidly spinning black hole in their center and have jets shooting light and other particles on the axis of rotation at nearly light speed. This was why we found these neutrinos on earth, because we are directly in one of the jets' line of fire.
This article mainly uses logos and pathos to get its point across and does not use much of ethos. The extensive use of logos can be attributed to the immense amount information in the article and explanations of many of the scientific terms. The author also uses quotes of many experts in the field such as "For 20 years, one of our dreams as a collaboration was to identify the sources of high-energy cosmic neutrinos, and it looks like we've finally done it!" (Cowen, 2018) and uses the enthusiasm of these experts to excite readers to use pathos as well.
I found this very interesting because this discovery could open up new doors for other discoveries. We primarily use light to find things in space but light has its own drawbacks, one major problem being that it gets blocked extremely easily. Neutrinos do not have this problem, they can phase through anything and though they travel slower than light, it is not so slow that it becomes a major problem.
