CE Blog 3: The Huffington Post & Wells Fargo

The Huffington Post is a news and opinion website that was founded in 2005. It covers politics, news, satire, business, entertainment, technology, and more. It is considered to be a liberal news source. The Huffington Post was acquired by AOL in 2011, and subsequently Verizon in 2015 when they purchased AOL. It is regarded as a popular site by several measures of performance and continues to pull in high ratings on the Alexa Global Traffic Rank. This article discusses how Wells Fargo is planning to cut up to 27,000 jobs by the year 2020. Wells Fargo has a goal of reducing costs by $4 billion by the same year. They are also operating under an asset cap by the Federal Reserve, in the wake of several scandals. Wells Fargo does not specify which parts of the company that will be affected by the cuts, but it will reflect the trend of consumer preferences. I found the article to be mostly objective in their portrayal, because there was not a lot of opinion injected into the reporting. They included remarks by an analyst that spoke about the cuts. The article also gives information about their financial standing, including their stock price at the time of posting. They do not include information about Well Fargo’s competitors, which in some ways suggests they are not trying to advertise another company. They also include a statement from Wells Fargo at the end that helps to balance out the ethos, pathos, logos of the article. My opinion is that they did a good job of remaining objective in their approach to the subject. They included both a statement from Wells Fargo, as well as an outside opinion. I think they could have done a better job at finding other outside opinions, though. Overall, I think that the Huffington Post, through the article provided by AP, attempted to have an objective viewpoint with this post.
