Assessment of the Source- Founded in 1877, The Washington Post has long been the source of news for not only the people of the nation's capital, but for the entire nation. The Post has been been known to carry a left-leaning bias in their reporting, which can be best emphasized by the slogan at the top of their website and paper, "Democracy Dies in Darkness."

Summary of the Article- This article tackles the issue of football players in America kneeling during the presentation of the flag and the reciting of the national anthem. It also addresses the recent controversy surrounding a Nike ad campaign with the player who started the kneeling trend, Colin Kaepernick. The article addresses the issue that some people see kneeling during the national anthem as "disrespectful" and "unpatriotic." The article goes so far as to quote a veteran who says that, through kneeling, the football players are directly targeting them, and everything that the flag means to them. The article then goes on to dispute that this is not the case, and that the flag does not only represent the veterans who have served in the military, it represents the pride of America as a whole. This follows with the views of the football players kneeling, not as an unpatriotic act, but as a call to action for what they feel are severe injustices towards citizens.

Analysis of the Article- Right Away, the article draws attention through it's abrasive title, "Veterans don't get to decide what respecting the flag means." This immediately draws interest, and almost taunts viewers to read further because it is such a bold statement. Then, throughout the article, the author, Salil Puri (a veteran himself), offers points as to why kneeling during the presentation of the flag and recitation of the national anthem is not disrespectful, but rather, it is a call to action that is being misconstrued. The article quotes sources like Kurt Schlicter, a former veteran and Fox News contributor. The article also references the Veterans of Foreign Wars, and the American Legion.

Opinion- In my opinion this article does a very good job at addressing it's topic. It draws attention with a bold title and is written by a veteran; so someone who is supposed to feel "disrespected" by the actions of these football players. The article also does a good job at examining an opposing view, and breaking down why it isn't necessarily true, and further explaining their point through other means, like official flag codes.
