Catholic Bishops Promising to Fix Sex Abuse Problem Face Cover-Up Accusations

Assessment of News Source
This article about the abuse allegations against catholic bishops was written by Laurie Goodstein of the New York Times. Laurie has been a major journalist for the religion department of the New York Times since 1997. Before working for the New York Times  she worked for several other high caliber newspapers such as the Washington Post. The New York Times is one of the most well know and influential newspapers in America at this time, and although they claim to be 100% impartial, in recent times they have seemed to lean more towards a democratic party point of view.

                                                Summary of Article

This article addresses the recent issues that the catholic church has been undertaking after the news that many priests were under investigation for sexual abuse, and that it was known by the church and covered up. Cardinal Daniel N. DiNardo who is the president of the American Bishops had taken it upon himself to come forward and try to reassure the catholic members that the church is taking the issues 100% seriously, but unfortunately it does not look like this is of much relief to the parish as he himself is under fire for having allowed one of the accused abusers to work in his district, after it was made known to him that the bishop had assaulted a women when she was 16. These issues have led members and theologians of the catholic church to band together and petition for all of the American bishops to resign, as they believe a total house cleaning is needed.

                                                     Analysis
The goal of this article was to share an important issue that the catholic church is having, explain exactly what the bishops did (sexual assault of minors), and explain what the catholic follows are doing in the wake of this issue to the mainstream public. The author of this article did a very good job staying impassive and not flavoring the article with opinion and merely told the facts of the case. This article was very well written and made it very easy to understand what is going on with the catholic church, and what may happen in the future.

                                                  Opinion 50

Even though the author of this article did a very good job staying impassive, I still formed a very strong opinion of the catholic church from this article. In my opinion the catholic church is absolutely corrupt. I believe at the VERY least all of the American bishops should have to resign and believe that every single bishop found guilty of any type of assault should be sentenced to life in prison.
